Research project at the Kolleg

Past in the Present: History, Politics and Society in Ukraine (1980s - 2000s)

The project seeksto explore the relationship and interaction between professional history writing, societal/cultural developments and political actions at national and international levels. Ukraine of the second half of 1980s to the beginning of 2000s serves as a major unit of analysis. The project will result in a monograph which will cover the following: use and misuse of history/past for the sake of the present by the state, political parties, groups of interest; institutional developments in the realm of politics of history (re-design of cultural spaces, old and new sites of memory, new institutions); legal and legislative practices (memorial laws, judicial cases, court hearings); political and international actions; use of 'historical memory' in struggle for power, 'revolutions' and warfare; : public perceptions and attitudes, regional divisions in understanding of the past, persons, dates and names, 'East - West' dilemma, Soviet and imperial legacy, popular stereotypes, prejudices and biases, para-historical 'imagined history'.
