In an era shaped by political instability, war, and economic disruption, pursuing an academic career can present even profounder challenges and more pressing questions than is already the case. This discussion brings together early-career and established researchers to reflect on how global crises are reshaping academic pathways, research agendas, the conditions under which knowledge is produced, whose knowledge is circulated and whose is side-lined. Together, we will explore what it means to begin a doctoral journey under conditions of uncertainty, and the practical as well as emotional challenges faced by researchers whose work is deeply affected by crisis, such as the war against Ukraine, the democratic backsliding in Georgia or uncertain economic conditions.
